In the Rangen, the Gewurztraminer grape variety is located right above the river Thur, enjoying a slightly warmer and more protected micro climate allowing for better ripeness. Despite its incredible solar, full south facing, the Rangen is a relatively late ripening climate, due to its altitude (350m to 480m) and the cold winds coming down the narrow valley. It takes a long time to ripen this grape in this Grand Cru but the volcanic soil does have a tremendous influence, both on the flavor profile of the wine and its ripeness. In 2021, the grapes were harvested ripe but with no over ripeness and botrytis. The fermentation was therefore very vigorous and the wine finished bone dry. This is a style that we achieve much more often in this vineyard now with this grape variety. An earlier phenolic ripeness means that it is easier to avoid excessive ripeness. Like many Gewurztraminer in 2021, the yields were microscopic so sadly there is a smaller amount of wine available.
