Pinot-gris is still today a misunderstood grape variety in Alsace. By nature, it is a grape that mutates easily, and this can be seen also in all the different style it can produce, from very light to extremely concentrated, dry to sweet, white, pink, orange, sparkling… In recent vintages, the earlier growth of the vines due to climate change make it more and more difficult to obtain quality botrytis and the acidity necessary to balance a high sweetness. Acidity drops as harvest is later, so we need higher acid vintages to produce such wines. Here, the Pinot-Gris is planted high on the steep west facing slopes of the Heimbourg. The harvest date is quite difficult to choose as sugars increases quickly for Pinot-Gris, so a less solar exposition makes it easier to obtain the perfect balance in order to obtain a dry wine. There is a good affinity between the red conglomerate limestone and Pinot-Gris. It brings structure and definition. This wine fermented very slowly but finished dry.

Harvest Note
2022 avoided the severe frost conditions of the prior year and the vines grew rapidly in the Spring months. The dry and hot conditions kept disease to a minimum but adversely affected flowering and caused a significant reduction in the overall crop size. A few late storms brought needed moisture but also some isolated hail damage. Harvest occured from August 22 to September 20 according to each vineyard's situation.
Tasting Note
Bright pale-yellow colour. Discreet yet elegant expressive nose showing fresh fruits (citrus, pears), delicate spring flowers, herbal and honeysuckle. The red calcareous rocky soil brings a tight harmony on the palate. The wines feels light and elegant yet suave, silky and finishes dry. Needless to say that it is showing very well today but will be able to evolve nicely for a few years.
