Windmills In the Vines: Excitement for A New Era of Moulin-a-Vent AOC

December 13, 2024

As we close down its centenary year, growers believe the Moulin-a-Vent appellation can reignite its former prestige and have chosen to apply for their own set of Premier Cru vineyards. After dusting off the historic maps, carrying out extensive soil testing, debating the internal politics, and balancing the opportunities with the tradeoffs, 14 vineyards have been put forward for recognition. For the wine lover, it’s a welcome development, and for Moulin-a-Vent, it’s a logical next chapter.

In 1996, Maison Jadot, one of Burgundy’s most accessible producers, purchased the historic Château des Jacques. By treating the vineyards with the same care applied to their Premier and Grand Cru vineyards further north, Château des Jacques began to produce different Moulin-à-Vent wines with personality and character of their origins. Today, the aspiration, is that each single-vineyard wine – such as those from Clos du Grand Carquelin, Clos de Rochegrès, and Clos des Thorins – reflects the unique soil composition, microclimate, and viticultural traditions of its specific parcel.
