Recently, Wine&Spirits Magazine and Kobrand organized a blind tasting of several vintages of Burgundy to celebrate Jacques Lardière’s winemaking career at the revered Maison Louis Jadot, an impressive tenure that began in 1970 and which has spanned 42 years. Lardière was hired straight out of school only a year after The Beatles played their last public concert, atop the roof of the Apple Records headquarters in London, and only a year after astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. Lardière has commented that during the early 1970s, much of the Côte de Beaune’s vineyards were still planted to Pinot Noir. Since Lardière’s first year with Jadot, the company has grown dramatically. Total yearly production has risen twenty times of wines from over 100 Burgundy appellations.
A gifted and intuitive winemaker, Lardière has an ability to sense the essential character of the harvest and this knowledge guides his winemaking decisions. He has helped Maison Louis Jadot build a reputation as one of Burgundy’s most trusted negociants, a firm that consistently turns out exceptional wines every year, especially in difficult vintages. Frédéric Barnier will take over winemaking duties at the end of 2012.
