A blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2018 Il Borgo is a renewed wine with this vintage. Past editions saw a blend of mostly Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon in a supporting role. This release is softer on the mid-palate with darkly extracted fruit. The wine reveals dark cherry, spice and hints of bittersweet chocolate that give it a very contemporary, accessible personality. Fruit is sourced from across 40 hectares of vine.
The oak-aged Tenute del Cabreo 2019 Chardonnay La Pietra shows a pretty bouquet with lots of aromatic detailing that spans from peach and nectarine to citrus, honeydew melon and almond. The wine is refreshing and zesty with lots of citrusy overtones that are typical of Chardonnay.
This is a very pretty, with currant, cherry and some mahogany and cigar-box character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with tight, linear tannins that are long and very intense. Polished nicely.
Aromas of golden apples, apricots, cream, salted caramel and hazelnuts. It’s medium-bodied with a creamy, buttery texture and fresh acidity. Praline and vanilla notes on the flavorful, rounded finish.
From the Folonari family, the Tenute del Cabreo 2019 Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon BST shows distinctive characteristics of both grapes used in the blend, with the fresh cherry flavors of the Italian grape contrasted against some of the earthy and spicy tones of the French variety. Those earthy tones veer toward terracotta and baked clay, and the tannins offer a fine, almost dusty quality. The wine shows a generous, medium build with lots of fresh dark fruit on the finish.
